About Us
Sillaacoffee is a socially responsible business structured so the workers who reap the harvests also reap the financial benefits. Working mainly with subsistence farming hill tribe peoples, we empower them to rise above economic oppression and ensure their well being and development. Sillaacoffee is grown at altitudes higher than 1000 meters above sea level to ensure the richest aroma and fullest flavored coffee. Our coffee is grown from Arabica seed certified in Thailand. Mountain soils in northern Thailand are deep and rich. We train our farmers in organic composting to sustain the health of the soil. Mulching is also necessary for a high quality harvest and soil sustainability. During the rainy season plant growth is prolific. Much work is required to keep the weeds and unwanted plants from encroaching on the coffee. This is cleared manually rather than being sprayed with chemicals and the resulting mulch is composted or placed around the base of the trees, (if the material is suitable.) Mulching the base of the trees promotes soil water retention and helps reduce pests. Composting replaces nutrients in the soil, promoting plant health and crop quality. Traditionally farmers have used slash and burn agricultural methods to grow rice and a few basic food crops – barely enough to live on. Using this method land can only sustain one or two years of farming before the soil nutrients are depleted. The land is then left to untended to rejuvenate, which takes around twenty years. The farmers burn off more forest to plant the next season's crops. Most governments have now banned this practice, (or severely limited it,) but the farmers often remain uneducated as to alternatives. Our training in best sustainable land usage equips farmers with the knowledge they need to continue farming the same land for generations. Shade grown coffee matures slowly yielding a crop with richer aroma and fuller flavor. Shaded coffee plantations are less susceptible to pests and plant stresses. WHY? A diverse planting of shade trees reduces the instances of pests prevalent within a plant monoculture. Fruit trees can be used as shade providers which also provide an additional harvest crop. Trees providing nitrogen fixing qualities are also used for shade. Sillaacoffee contracts with land owners, who farm our coffee, to buy their crops directly at guaranteed fair trade prices. Often farmers struggle to repay generations old debts incurred with middlemen who have no regard for their economic struggles. We provide the farmers with an alternative. They contract with us to farm the coffee strictly in accordance with the organics training we provide, to bring about bountiful, top quality coffee beans that fetch a top price. |
